"My dream is to have my music played"
I believe that the need for expression is in every one of us. When that expression is suppressed then we suffer. It was under this kind of limitation that composers like Shostakovich composed; and suffered.
I myself was boxed in as a child by a mechanical brace to straighten my spine and I felt a very strong need to express myself in a way that I could not do through speech.
My first piece for piano as a child was called - A Bid for Freedom.
As an adult I have been deeply moved by historical events such as the holocaust and I have discovered that there are deeper feelings that come out through the music, whilst I am composing. A kind of therapy takes place within me which transfers to the piece and eventually, I hope, to the listener.
My first piano sonata began with a fierce gesture towards the piano - a physical movement of expression. Composition lessons then taught me how to manage my ideas and to create form and structure and I write now simply because I can't help it!
