Trickier Tunes for Tamariki - 12. Village Dance

23/3/2025

12. Village Dance starts at 3:56

Available from SOUNZ here

Trickier Tunes for Tamariki by composers from Aotearoa New Zealand
Appealing original pieces, especially composed for violin students at grade 3, 4 or 5 level, with a simple piano or violin accompaniment. Youth Music Festival Whakanui o Puoro is Wellington Branch IRMTNZ’s annual performance showcase for students of all ages and instruments, in which each performer’s programme must include a piece by a composer from Aotearoa New Zealand. The committee organized the Trickier Tunes for Tamariki project in order to provide more mid-grade repertoire for instruments other than piano. Pieces in this volume were chosen from composers’ responses to a call for scores.

String Quartet No.13 - new work

1 – Two-Minutes Hate, 2 – Ring-a-Ring-a Roses, 3 – Thoughtcrime,
4 – BIG BROTHER, 5 – Julia, 6 – Ownlife, 7 – London Bridge,
8 – Oranges and Lemons

My 12th string quartet was inspired by George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Therefore it was only natural that I would read 1984 next and I knew from the start that I wanted to compose a work based on this story, and that became my 13th string quartet. It is in eight Chapters rather than movements. Some are played without a break others naturally pause but the overall effect of the work is one large movement.
