Some years ago I was invited to the home of the artist Greg Tricker where he showed me some batik paintings that he was working on inspired by Anne Frank's Diary. Shortly after seeing them I sat down at on old harmonium that was in the room and wrote the opening theme for a new piece of music. Although I did not realise it at the time this was to become the opening of the Piano Trio No. 1 'Het Achterhuis' (The Secret Annexe), which developed into in six movements.
More recently Het Achterhuis was developed into a major theatre work by Ensemble Theatre Company. Newly titled Souvenir d'Anne Frank this was an innovative project written by Elizabeth Mansfield, which toured UK in 2011-2012. The theatre adaptation had at its heart, Anne Frank's Diary, the Japanese horticulturalist Mr Yamamuro, and it told the unique story - of a rose.
