The harpsichord enters with an angular, rhythmic theme. The strings support with pizzicato chords. At Bar 15 the strings take up a repeating pattern marked col legno. At Bar 36 the harpsichord develops the opening statement in an extended solo. At Bar 63 the harpsichord skips around against a limping ostinato on strings. At Bar 140 the harpsichord plays repeated chords over which the strings play unison melodies. Eventually the harpsichord ducks out and gives the string quartet the floor. At 185 the solo harpsichord re-enters with the earlier theme and running semi-quavers whilst the strings play a quasi-trombone tune. At Bar 222 the harpsichord again asserts its presence. At 263 there is a return to the Largo slow section but not for long. After a mad flourish of semi-quavers the music expands to a glorious climax and then resigns to a held chord over which the harpsichord soloist plays ascending triads.

Brass instruments have always been very evocative instruments for me. Silver Bands conjure mining collieries and there is a strong association with military or martial marches and parades. 'Once Great Nation' for brass quintet evokes a fallen empire throughout its three movements. And what empire hasn't fallen in recent times? This work was composed in New Zealand.
