I've just completed a new book of piano pieces entitled Homages. With a new Scherzo for Poulenc, Ballade for Chopin, Sonatina for Haydn and Shostakovich, and a Rag for Scott Joplin.
I'm just publishing four Little Pieces for Clarinet in Bb and piano. They are aimed at around Grade 1-3 standard for clarinet and they are four, fun, quirky, dance-like little pieces. (Cover painting by Chris Ringland)
Recently an exciting new melody made itself apparent to me. as Stravinsky said of the Firebird theme, 'such melodies come along once in a lifetime'. So I am very pleased that this new 'tune' has manifested. I am calling it the Maidan theme because it appeared at the same time as the events in Maidan Square, Kiev, Ukraine. And it has entered a few of my works of late. Namely the Piano Concerto No.2, Violin Sonatina, Sonatina No.3 for double bass and piano. And most recently in the Chromanic Suite. A melody appearing like that is truly a gift and not something that could possibly have been manufactured. It grew naturally out of the music. It may have its roots in the Ukrainian melody from my Second Symphony. At least its one for the musicologists after I'm gone!
Recently played through my French Horn Sonatina with horn player (and artist) Stephen Belinfante and we both had great fun.
Currently preparing a new piano work for publishing to be called the Chromanic Suite. |
